4-H D&D: Sessions #21-22!

The Final Battle

Soon after they encountered the unfamiliar Twig Blights, which they later identified as Vine Blights and Needle Blights, they found Mr. Misty camping nearby. Berov, Mordai, Glacian, Myev, Sharwyn, Talgen, Sir Braford, and Bane continued to fight long and hard against the creatures.

First, they were able to take out the Vine Blights. After exchanging some blows with Mr. Misty, however, they discovered that he was animating some of the dead beneath the ground and they zombie creatures began to attack them. 

Myev then got up close and personal with Mr. Misty and used their Moonbeam attack against it. This decisive, radiant blow immediately incinerated Mr. Misty... and revealed his final form, a grotesque, fleshy aberration with a wide open maw. The players decided to call the creature Mr. Maw for simplicity's sake.

They continued fighting, finally defeating the remaining Needle Blights and fending off the zombies, which were raising again every couple of minutes or so. Towards the end of the battle, Mr. Maw began to use its life steal attack on Berov. He failed is Constitution Saving Throw, which threatened instant death for the Loxodon Cleric. However, thanks to Mordai's well-timed Counterspell, he was able to negate the move's effect, saving Berov's life.

After a session and a half of exchanging blows and more Counterspells on Mordai's part. Myev was finally able to land the finishing blow on Mr. Maw. They reveled in their victory and hauled Mr. Maw's corpse back to Oakhurst.

Upon returning to the gates of Oakhurst, though, they were met with silence. the air was still and there was not a soul in sight. After turning the corner to the town square, they were met with an ear-piercing scream...

"SURPRISE!"

The villagers all gathered to welcome their heroes back from their victory. Zaria and Mayor Vernor planned the occasion. They all engaged in some merriment together, and the mayor presented the party with several gifts, a set of items historic to Oakhurst: the Breakback Breastplate, the Boots of the Farmland, the Helm of the Hometown Hero, and an amulet called the Sage's Sorrow.

They closed the session by presenting their newly minted team name: the Conquerors of Destiny.

Upon visiting Felosial’s office, they found a familiar Drow, Allas, one of the folks who ambushed the group during Darrus’ trap in the Underdark. He theorized that Mr. Misty was weakened or otherwise disinclined to fight in the light. Using that information, you formulated a plan to bring the fight directly to him. They destroyed the spider and crossed the gate, but were intercepted my more Drow elves. These Drow claimed that they had been trailing the team of surfacers for some time and was collecting information on them. The leader of this group, a woman named Ishtar, offered something of a deal between them, but first said that she will escort them to Menzoberranzan, the Drow city and the party's goal. Without much of a choice, they decided to follow Ishtar and her team. At her compound, Ishtar told the party that she and her cadre sought to revolutionize Menzoberranzan and bring about radical change to her people ...
